Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi

Situated on a serene hilltop about 40 km from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, the Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi are among the most important and oldest Buddhist sanctuaries in India. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989 under Criteria (i), (ii), (iii), (iv), and (vi), this site includes stupas, monolithic pillars, temples, and monasteries dating from the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is especially renowned for its intricate carvings and architectural brilliance. The site remained a thriving centre of Buddhist culture until the 12th century CE.
