Group of Monuments at Pattadakal

Karnataka

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the Group of Monuments at Pattadakal in Karnataka showcases the pinnacle of Chalukyan temple architecture. Flourishing in the 7th and 8th centuries, Pattadakal represents a harmonious blend of northern Nagara and southern Dravidian architectural styles. The site comprises nine Hindu temples and a Jain sanctuary, reflecting deep religious and cultural significance. The Virupaksha Temple, commissioned by Queen Lokamahadevi around 740 CE, is an architectural masterpiece celebrating her husband's triumph. These monuments highlight the Chalukyas' architectural innovation and their patronage of art, faith, and craftsmanship.
