Hill Forts of Rajasthan

Rajasthan

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the Hill Forts of Rajasthan comprise six spectacular forts located in Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Jhalawar, Jaipur, and Jaisalmer. These formidable structures, developed between the 8th and 18th centuries, showcase the architectural brilliance and military prowess of the Rajput kingdoms. Enclosed within vast defensive walls—some spanning 20 km—are palaces, temples, urban settlements, and water harvesting systems that continue to function today. The forts integrate natural defenses like hills and forests, and reflect a flourishing courtly culture marked by learning, arts, and spirituality.
