The Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

Jaipur

A celestial marvel carved in stone, the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the largest and best-preserved historic observatory in India. Built in the early 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II, this architectural masterpiece houses around 20 fixed instruments used to observe astronomical phenomena with the naked eye. These massive masonry structures, some the largest of their kind, blend science, art, and architecture to track stars, predict eclipses, and measure time. Rooted in Ptolemaic astronomy, the Jantar Mantar stands as a testament to India’s rich scientific heritage, the intellectual pursuits of its royal courts, and the enduring human quest to understand the cosmos.
