Since 1976, India has successfully retrieved a total of 655 antiquities from various foreign countries, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the nation’s cultural heritage. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) continues to play a pivotal role in conserving and maintaining 3,685 monuments and archaeological sites of national importance across the country. These efforts include regular upkeep and the provision of visitor amenities such as drinking water, toilet facilities, walkways, and landscaping.
Additionally, the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA), established in 2007, has made significant progress in documentation. It has recorded 11,406 Built Heritage and Sites and catalogued over 12.41 lakh antiquities. This vast repository of India’s heritage has been made accessible through the NMMA website (https://nmma.nic.in), ensuring transparency and public engagement. These initiatives collectively underscore India’s ongoing efforts to safeguard its rich and diverse cultural legacy.
