The Ministry of Culture is commemorating the glorious legacy of Emperor Rajendra Chola I with the Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival, being held from 23rd to 27th July 2025 at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Tamil Nadu. Marking 1,000 years of Rajendra Chola’s historic maritime expedition to Southeast Asia and the construction of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, the five-day celebration showcases the Chola dynasty’s unmatched contributions to temple architecture, Shaivism, and Tamil classical arts.
The grand finale on 27th July will be graced by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, along with the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Union Ministers. Cultural highlights include Bharatanatyam performances by Kalakshetra Foundation, Devaram Thirumurai chanting, and a musical tribute by maestro Ilaiyaraaja. The festival also features exhibitions by the ASI and heritage walks that offer deep insights into Chola Shaiva traditions and architecture—honouring the enduring impact of Tamil Shaiva Bhakti and Rajendra Chola’s vision.
