Maratha Military Landscapes of India Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

In a significant recognition of India's cultural legacy, the 'Maratha Military Landscapes of India' has been inscribed as the 44th entry on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris. This nomination, led by the Archaeological Survey of India, highlights 12 strategically built forts across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu that reflect the military ingenuity of the Maratha Empire from the 17th to 19th centuries.

The selected sites include hill forts like Shivneri and Raigad, coastal and island forts such as Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg, and the unique Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu. The inscription under criteria (iv) and (vi) recognises their architectural brilliance and historical significance. This global honour underscores India’s commitment to preserving its heritage and builds on last year’s inclusion of the Moidams of Charaideo. With 44 World Heritage Sites, India now ranks 6th globally and continues to promote its rich cultural identity worldwide.
