Replica of Ashoka Pillar Unveiled at Waskaduwa Sri Subhuthi Viharaya, Sri Lanka

A replica of the iconic Ashoka Pillar was inaugurated on 21st July 2025 at the sacred Waskaduwa Sri Subhuthi Viharaya in Sri Lanka’s Kalutara district. Built with the support of H.E. Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, the initiative marks a tribute to Emperor Ashoka’s enduring contribution to Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The unveiling ceremony saw participation from Chief Incumbent Most Venerable Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayaka Thero, Indian High Commissioner Shri Santosh Jha, dignitaries from the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), and local leaders.

High Commissioner Shri Jha highlighted the strong cultural and spiritual ties between India and Sri Lanka, citing initiatives like India’s USD 15 million grant for Buddhist linkages and Pali language promotion. The temple, which houses Kapilavastu relics gifted by India, stands as a symbol of shared heritage. The installation of the pillar reaffirms historic bonds and deepens the spiritual connection between the two nations.
