Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission

Inner Banner

In April 2006, the Ministry of Culture established the Gandhi Heritage Sites Panel, chaired by Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, to identify and preserve significant sites associated with Mahatma Gandhi. The panel submitted its report on November 26, 2008, identifying 39 core sites and a Master List of 2,000 Gandhi-related locations. This led to the creation of the "Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission," officially established on July 29, 2013, with Shri Sailesh Kumar Bandopadhaya as chairman.

Subsequently, Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust (SAPMT), Ahmedabad developed and launched the Gandhi Heritage Portal on September 2, 2013. The Ministry of Culture website hosts the portal which functions as a comprehensive digital archive, preserving and providing access to critical documents and records related to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
The mission aims to manage and promote Gandhi's legacy over a five-year term, focusing on assessing and conserving heritage materials, developing maintenance guidelines for sites, and disseminating information through a web portal and various publications.

The mission's various projects are implemented by the headquarters in New Delhi, which actively collaborates with Zonal Cultural Centres (North, South, East, West, and Central Zones) to improve coordination with state governments. The goal of this collaboration is to improve cross-cultural ties and guarantee smooth operation across all zones.
