National Mission on Libraries (NML)

Established in 2012 based on the recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission, the National Mission on Libraries (NML) focuses on the ongoing development of libraries. Its objectives include overhauling public library systems and services and offering digital content-based services to citizens. The scheme encourages collaboration with State Governments for cost-sharing in library modernization.
It comprises four primary components, each executed by different institutions: the National Virtual Library of India (NVLI) - a digital repository of cultural heritage with multilingual search capabilities, the NML Model Library Scheme - to upgrade public library infrastructure and to improve accessibility, a Quantitative and Qualitative Survey - to gather feedback from users and non-users, and Capacity Building – to upskill library professionals.
